Before you start the ascent to Cogne, it is well worth taking a break in Aymavilles, dominated by the crenellated towers of its Castle and surrounded by the vineyards of some of the most famous wineries of the region: La Cave des Onze Communes, Les Crêtes, l' Atoueyo and Gerbelle Didier.
In addition to the pretty countryside and good wine, in Aymavilles you’ll also find a wealth of examples of the history and arts of the Aosta Valley, including its famous castle, Saint Martin's church and Saint Léger's church.
Built in 3 B.C. by two Roman settlers, Aimus and Avilius, over the gorge of the Grand Eyvia, the aqueduct is an imposing piece masonry built using stone blocks measuring 82 m tall and over 50 m in length.
It is one of the most compelling monuments of the Roman era, still perfectly preserved and open for visits.
